Toyota’s New 7 Seater SUV – Mini Fortuner In ₹ 9.2 Lakh | Tough Fight to Ertiga, Mahindra Scorpio

Toyota’s compact Fortuner is set to compete with the Mahindra Scorpio N and XUV700.

It is widely acknowledged that the Toyota Fortuner has transitioned away from being a mass-market SUV. In fact, in certain cities such as Bangalore, the price of the Fortuner has surpassed Rs 60 lakh. This significant price increase has created an opportunity for other manufacturers to introduce SUVs within the sub-40 lakh segment. Notable models such as the Mahindra Thar Roxx, XUV700, and Scorpio N have demonstrated impressive sales figures in the Indian automotive market.

Details on the Toyota Mini Fortuner

In an interesting development, Toyota is in the process of creating a new rugged 4×4 SUV that will occupy the space between the Urban Cruiser Hyryder and the Fortuner. Initial speculation suggested that this new model would be based on the cost-effective IMV0 platform, which supports the Hilux Champ in Thailand. However, recent media reports indicate that Toyota plans to utilize a completely new flexible platform that can accommodate various body styles and powertrains.

Currently, Toyota is marketing the Innova Hycross MPV, which is built on the existing TNGA-C platform, also used for the Corolla Cross in select international markets. Nevertheless, this platform may be too costly for the new mini Fortuner, leading to the possibility of a more economical version of the TNGA platform being employed for the upcoming SUV.

Hybrid and Petrol Engine Options

A significant update regarding the new mini Fortuner, which will be based on a monocoque chassis, is that it is unlikely to feature a diesel engine. Instead, this new lifestyle SUV is expected to offer petrol and strong hybrid engine alternatives. It may be equipped with a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine paired with a robust hybrid system, similar to that found in the current Innova Hycross. Additionally, a pure petrol engine, potentially the 2.0L unit available in the Hycross, could also be included. An electric variant may be introduced at a later date.

The forthcoming SUV is anticipated to draw design elements from the existing Fortuner, showcasing high ground clearance, a rugged aesthetic, and a 4×4 drivetrain. Production is reportedly set to take place at Toyota’s new facility in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Maharashtra, with manufacturing expected to commence in 2027.
